State of Tripura in northeastern India. Area: 4,049 square miles (10,486 square kilometres). Population: 3,671,032 (2011). Agartala is the capital. Bangladesh borders it on the north, west, and south, and Mizoram and Assam states border it on the east. Before becoming a part of the Mughal Empire in the 17th century, it was an autonomous Hindu kingdom. It was influenced by the British after 1808. Tripura became a union territory in 1956 and was granted statehood in 1972. Agriculture is the principal economic activity, with rice and jute being the most important crops.
