The Republic of the Maldives is located south-west of the Indian subcontinent. It is made up of roughly 1,200 islands, the most of which are deserted. None of the coral islands rise higher than 1.8 metres (six feet) above sea level, leaving the country vulnerable to any sea-level rise caused by global warming.
